Representatives from GO Technology Management and Cherry Systems established an alliance in the Disaster Recovery and Data Recovery industries. The two companies address data loss in very complementary ways: one is prevention, the other is recovery.
Cherry Systems works with large enterprise customers who regularly take their data with them, such as "road warriors" (traveling laptop users), those using flash drives and those that have very confidential files that have little or no back-ups. When these computers have a failure, their data may not have been backed-up and required recovery service to regain access to the data and content. Meeting notes, presentations, financial reports or other working documents are often worth many thousands of dollars if it were possible and practical to recreate them.
"Recovery of data is very likely if the recovery effort is started quickly instead of hoping that it will fix itself," said Hal Schlenger of Cherry Systems. "Use of a failing or failed hard drive, including many off-the-shelf recovery software packages, can cause further damage to the data on the drive. Here are two tips:
- "If the computer has visible water damage, or you know that it was exposed to rain, flood, or substantial moisture, do not turn on the computer. Any water or other particles getting in to the hard drive will damage your content.
- "If the computer turns on and operates properly most but not all of the time, there could be a variety of either computer logic failures or hardware failures. In many cases, the computer will reboot and work for a short time, and then 'lock-up' or 'get stuck again.
GO Technology Management approaches Enterprise customers from the other side, offering services that protect all the data on the server side of the equation. "We provide a near-time recovery for organizations that don't have or cannot afford costly real-time backup solutions," said Dudley Wells of GO. "Our solution eliminates the need for tapes or human-interaction."
Both Wells and Schlenger agree that it is rarely practical to re-create lost data. "When determining the worth or value of their data or content, people typically don't know what files and content they have. It's just like people not knowing what they have stored in their attic," Schlenger explained.
"To recreate and recompile files requires having a person or team of people with the suitable skills and access to the information create reports, presentations and artwork that were lost," added Wells. "It assumes the person can accept missed deadlines, slightly inaccurate recreations and the lost opportunity that is a result of the time recreating the files instead of the person performing their primary responsibility. The right solution is creating a relationship with GO and Cherry Systems."
